Meet Robert Burnard

This is Robert, the man we must thank for these amazing pictorial records. Born on July 12th 1848, he was "Member of Council, Devon and Cornwall Camera Club and Member of Committee, Dartmoor Preservation Association". His "Dartmoor Pictorial Records" were published privately with only 150 copies printed by W. Brendon & Son, George Street, Plymouth. To see some of his incredible work, check out the following link:

I have just stumbled upon your fascinating blog and was delighted to see a photograph of Robert Burnard, the photographer who was my own great-great-grandfather's cousin.

My great-great-grandfather, Richard Burnard was the older brother of Charles Frederick Burnard.

Richard's daughter, Margaret Burnard, married my great- grandfather, James McFarlane, and their elder son, my grandfather, was named Arthur Burnard McFarlane.

Since finding out that there was a keen photographer among my grandfather's relatives, I have often wondered whether there might be surviving photographs of any of my direct ancestors. I am hoping to be able to look at the Robert Burnard archive next year.

I live in Yorkshire, but have already visited Laneast, Lewannick and Altarnun which all crop up in the Burnard family tree. I have also seen the actual house in Plympton St.Maurice where my great-grandparents Richard and Margaret Burnard lived for some years.

My grandparents used to enjoy holidays in Devon, which makes me wonder whether my grandfather had memories of visiting his relations there as a boy.

I should explain that I chose the name Sally Burnard as a pen name for a book I published recently. My actual name is Dany Wlodarczyk, as my mother, Sheila McFarlane married a Polish pilot who came to England during WW2.

I was mistaken in my previous comment. Robert Burnard (the photographer) was my great-great-grandfather Richard Burnard's nephew and my great-grandmother Margaret Burnard's cousin
